Pulaski Elementary School - Attendance policy
A school year consists of 180 days. Because classroom attendance is so important, a student must be present for 160 days to be considered for promotion to the next grade. A day lost from class can never be recaptured.
A school day begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m..
When a student is absent from school, his/her absence is considered unexcused. Absences due to a suspension are also considered unexcused. For an absence to be excused, the parent/guardian must provide a verifiable Doctor's note or hand written note explaining the child's absence. The school has the option to accept/deny and accuses provided. Only 5 parent/guardian notes will be accepted per semester. The school has the option to no longer accept parent notes.
When a student is absent for multiple days, a parent/guardian may request the work/assignments a student has missed. The request must be made before 10:00 a.m.. Assignments will be available fore picked up after 1:00 p.m. in the front office. Any requests made after 10:00 a.m. may not be available until the following day. A student is allowed 2 days for each day absent to return missed assignments. Five consecutive absences for medical reasons may require a doctor's verification.
After 5 unexcused absences, the parent/guardian will receive a truancy letter from the Giles County Attendance Supervisor. Continued unexcused absences could result in an attendance/truancy meeting with the Giles County Attendance Supervisor and the attendance committee of Pulaski Elementary School or legal action.
A tardy is considered to be anytime a student is late to school or dismissed early from school.
Late Arrivals - All doors are locked when the 7:55 a.m. bell rings each morning. Any student, who is not inside the building and in his/her classroom before the doors are locked, is considered tardy. The student must be brought to the office by the parent/guardian to be signed in. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD AT THE FRONT STEPS. YOU MUST WALK INTO THE OFFICE WITH YOUR CHILD.
Early Dismissals - We encourage all doctor and/or dental appointments to be made after school, on a school holiday or during Fall/Spring break when possible. However, should a student need to leave school early, he/she must be signed out at the office by a parent/guardian. All early dismissals are considered unexcused unless a doctor/dental note is provided to the school (unless sent home by the school nurse).
A student must be present at school for 3 hours and 15 minutes (after 11:15 a.m.) to receive credit for the day. A student who is in attendance less than half the state required minimum school day SHALL NOT be counted present for any portion of the day.
After 5 unexcused tardy, an attendance/truancy letter will be sent to the parent/guardian. After 10 unexcused tardy, the parent/guardians will be referred to the Giles County Attendance Supervisor. At that time, the parent/guardian may be asked to attend a meeting with the Pulaski Elementary School Attendance Committee and Giles County Attendance Supervisor or legal action may be considered.
Multiple tardiness will prevent a student from receiving perfect attendance for the year.
