Staff Spotlights

Mr. Barry Bass graduated from GCHS, earned his Associates Degree from Martin Methodist College, his Bachelor’s Degree from Belmont, and his Masters +30 from MTSU.  He has been a teacher for 37 years.  In addition to teaching, he started the first Giles County soccer team and league; he has coached both football and soccer; he has traveled extensively across the globe to many places including 45 U.S. states, Russia, Europe, Japan, and the Middle East.

The “great loves” of his life are his wife and best friend of 39 years, Jan Bass; two children and his daughter-in-law, two grandchildren; and music.  Psalms 150 is his favorite bible passage.  Mr. Bass stated, “These 58 years have been a blast and I know I’ll be seeing many new chapters and changes in the near future.”

Mrs. Sandy Young started working as the GCHS secretary in 2010.  She grew up in Giles County and graduated from Giles County High School.  After attending Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, MS, she moved to Nashville where she began a career in banking.  After completing banking school at UNC, Charlotte NC, she served as an Assistant Vice President, Corporate Trust Division of First American Bank (now Regions Bank).  Mrs. Young spent fifteen years in Nashville before making the decision to move back home and marry her best friend, Joe Young, 15 years ago.

After returning home, she worked with Brindley Construction, serving as Office and Human Resource Manager.

Mrs. Young is a very involved and proud mother of two very busy boys, Mack 12 and Riley 9.  She feels very fortunate to be associated with Giles County High School and the staff.   She learned from some of the same teachers that are still teaching today and receives great pleasure helping all that come her way.  She stated, “The real reward is at the end of the day when my children arrive from their schools and we are off to tackle practices, ballgames, appointments, homework or whatever they have planned.

Homecoming 2012 – A Triumph

GCHS would like to say a special thanks to all the parents for their help, the students for their spirit, the community for supporting GCHS, the banner and float judges, the teachers for a great week of patience, the Student Council for putting on a great week, and Mrs. Jamie Bedingfield for leading and directing the numerous activities.

Last week, the student body was locked in fierce interclass competition in the following areas:  float construction/decoration, spirit links, spirit banners, dress-up days, pep session enthusiasm, duck tape a student to the wall, relay races, and tug-of-war.  These points were totaled and the Senior Class had the highest number of total points which earned them the                            2012 Homecoming Spirit Award.

The GCHS football team handily defeated East Hickman 58-6.  Way to go gentlemen!

The Homecoming Court consisted of the GCHS mascot, cheerleaders, and 21 couples representing our feeder schools, classes, the crown bearer Tripp Abernathy and flower girl Eliza Nelson.  Congratulations to Miss Ellen Garner who was crowned Homecoming Queen.  She was escorted by Mr. Austin Greene.
