Elkton School New
October 2010

Congratulations to Morgan Dunnavant - Student Council Student of the
Month for October. Other third, fourth, and fifth graders
nominated for this top honor by their homeroom teachers were Madison
Moore, Payton Walls, Makenzie Kelley, Makeia Bellefant, Bonnie
Brunko, Hailey Kelley, Madison Mitchell, Juliann Wray, Houston
Smith, Nathaniel South, and Jacob Rayburn.
Elkton
School would like to welcome the following new members to the
faculty and staff. Ms. Laura Drew is teaching k-4 resource.
Miss Melissa McElrath is a one-on-one paraprofessional. Mr.
Justin Wilbanks, a student teacher from Martin Methodist College, is
working with Mrs. Nadine Herrington in seventh and eighth grade
science. Mrs. Savannah Selby, also a student from Martin
Methodist College, is working with Mrs. Teri Mize to fulfill her
required field experience hours in secondary English.
A BIG
THANK YOU TO THE PRE-K STUDENTS! They turned in an enormous
amount of pull tabs this month to the Beta Club. They have
worked really hard in collecting these. Remember, they are
sent to the Ronald McDonald House in Nashville.
The mission Ronald McDonald Charities of Nashville is to "keep
families close" by providing essential resources and a "home away
from home" for families of critically ill children receiving
inpatient or outpatient medical care at Nashville area hospitals.
Early
this fall Elkton School established its first Green Schools
Team called the Green Patrol This program was established in
1996 by TVA to help school districts save on energy costs and to
afford students the opportunity to become environmental stewards and
energy-efficiency advocates in schools, homes, and communities.
The goals of the Green Schools Program are to educate students,
faculty, staff, and the school community about energy efficiency and
its relationship to the environment and the economy; provide
immediate energy savings to the schools and homes through no-cost
behavioral and operations changes by encouraging retrofits; and
strengthen academic learning using hands-on project-based
instruction and tools. The fourth through eighth grade Green
Patrol members are Brian Moore, Austin Callahan, Morgan Dunnavant,
Rylie Hill, David Erwin, Cheyanne Garner, Mary Mize, Justice
Billings, Lauren Bell, Kyle Oliver, Taylor Spivey, Destiny Cross,
Casie Miller, Matthew Dunnavant, Jacob Herbertz, Dylan Gibbs,
Pesleigh Hall, Chasity Back, Anthony South, and Jared Allen.
Teacher sponsors are Mrs. Angela Mayes and Mrs. Nadine Herrington.
Girls'
and boys' basketball tryouts have been held. Those
representing the Lady Elks for the 2010-2011 season are Tyneshia
Vance, Kailee Rogers, Jackie Conway, Haley Garner, Keneisha Love,
Kristen Williams, Briley Gaudette, Sarah Williams, Chasity Back,
Pesleigh Hall, Haley Witt, Tierra Johnson, Jamie Martin, and
Chrystal Pierce. Destini Harney and Alexis Rose are the Lady
Elk's managers. Returning to coach the Lady Elks to victory
this season after a long break is Coach Ricky Rose.
Representing the Elks for the 2010-2011 season under the leadership
of Coach Terrance Cross are Matthew Dunnavant, Michael Ledford,
Caymen Edwards, Clayton McAlister, Steven Brunko, Tyler Trotter,
Anthony South, Parker Walls, Jedidiah Jenkins, Keegan Potter, Rkell
Reed, Ethan Turbyfill, Shawn Gibson, Kyler Oliver, and Peyton Hall.
Morgan Witt and David Erwin are the Elk's managers.
On
October 4, the faculty and staff served Mr. John Hughes a special
home cooked meal. He has left his substitute position at
Elkton School for a year of military service in Iraq.
The
magazine assembly was held on October 5. Prizes were awarded
to Mrs. Smith's class, the top class with over $2000.00 in sales.
Mrs. Herrington's, Mrs. Tucker's, Mrs. Scott's, and Ms. Deason's
classes had over $1000 in sales each. The top three sellers
were first Jackson Hughes with $653.00 in sales. He won $50.
Sam Bolen was second with $360.00 in sales. He received $30.
The third top seller was Jasmine Billings with $283.00. She
won $20. In total, over 175 students over $15,000.00 in
magazines.
On
October 6, Quest students went to the Nashville Children's Theater
to see "Bud, Not Buddy."
The
Energize Guys brought their performance to Elkton School on October
7 for k-6.
The Fall
Athletic Banquet was held on October 7. Awards were presented
to cheerleaders, football players, and soccer players for their
achievements in athletics during the fall sport's season.
Congratulations to Mrs. Paulette Bledsoe, Elkton School's pre-K
instructor. She was the Pulaski Citizen's Citizen of
the Week for October 12.
The
Natural History Educational Company of the Midsouth's annual wild
animal show visited the gym on October 18. This year's
visitors included a Red Kangaroo, a hedgehog, an Egyptian fruit bat,
a European legless lizard, and a silkie chicken.
A
traveling jump rope team from Maury County entertained students on
October 18 to announce and help kick off the upcoming Jump Rope for
Heart to be held on November 12.
Mrs.
Carol Abernathy has announced the members of this year's Scholastic
Bowl team. Congrats go to Anthony South, Clayton McAlister,
Jared Allen, Alana Carter, Kailee Rogers, Casie Miller, Destini
Harney, and Tyler Owens.
The PTO's
annual Harvest Festival was held on October 22. First place
winners of the poster contest were Justice Billings, Jasmine
Billings, Laura Cox, Rachel Oliver, and Elizabeth Cox. Second
place winners were Farron Graves and Hunter Holladay.
Congratulations to Gloria Hill, the winner of the laptop computer.
She bought the winning ticket from Aiden Hill.
On
October 22, Nurse Tina Carlton called the SWAT (Student Wellness
Advocacy Team) team together for its first meeting. SWAT
members this year are Tyneshia Vance, Tyler Owens, Ethan Turbyfill,
Zach Daniels, Bradley Thompson, Sarah Williams, Clayton McAlister,
and Laura Carter.
Eighth
grade students Alana Carter and Clayton McAlister were Elkton
School's representatives in the GCHS homecoming festivities on
October 29.
The PTO
aluminum can drive will be taking cans on the first and third
Tuesday of each month until the end of school. Drop them off
in the pick up container in the back parking lot of the school.
