Mr. J. B. Smith III, Winner of the 2012 Value-Added Achievement Award
In a May 14, 2012, ceremony held at the Tennessee Supreme Court, Education Consumers Foundation President J. E. Stone presented awards of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000 to Tennessee's highest performing elementary and middle school principals. Our own Mr. Smith received 2nd-place in the Middle School Division! He has donated his award to Bridgeforth Middle School. Recipients were selected on the basis of their school's most recent 3-year average achievement gains in math and reading/language arts. Only those principals with 5 or more years of service were considered. The Education Consumers Foundation launched the Value-Added Achievement Awards in Tennessee in 2006. This annual awards initiative was created to recognize the most effective principals and schools in the state, while at the same time building awareness and understanding of the state's value-added data system (the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System, or TVAAS). The Foundation was honored to see participation Commissioner of Education Kevin Huffman, who spoke and served as a co-presenter of the awards.
